KOLN / KGIN BROADCASTING CORPORATION

KOLN / KGIN, Channel 10/11, has been successful for more than half a century because it takes great care in selecting its employees. Working as a team member at KOLN / KGIN is critical to the continued success of the organization and is a primary responsibility of each and every employee.

At 4:45 pm on Wednesday, February 18, in 1953, a black and white test pattern appeared on Lincoln’s television screens. For 14 minutes that first broadcast served as a prelude of things to come for KOLN TV, the city’s first television station.

KOLN / KGIN actually began as a radio station. In 1950, the owners applied for a television channel to serve the Lincoln area. Permission was granted in 1952 and approximately one year later, broadcasting began on Channel 12. In February of 1954, owner John Fetzer and the Cornhusker Television Corporation, purchased Channel 10, KFOR TV, and received approval to move KOLN to that Channel.

The Channel 12 facilities were donated to the University of Nebraska, for the establishment of educational television.

Originally an affiliate of the DuMont Network, KOLN later changed to the ABC Television Network and finally to CBS in June of 1954. Later that summer, a 1,000 foot tower and full transmitter were dedicated near Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. This small, local station eventually mushroomed into a regional broadcasting facility during October of 1961 with the addition of satellite station KGIN, Channel 11 in Grand Island.

KOLN / KGIN 10/11 is now owned by Gray Television, Inc. located in Atlanta, Georgia. KOLN / KGIN’s share of audience is among the highest rated of CBS affiliates in the country.

Reaching approximately 300,000 households, 10/11 is proud of its history.
